About the Ferrari 488

There are not many sports car brands that have earned a reputation of the calibre of “Ferrari”. With its mostly red super sports cars, the Maranello-based factory is regarded by car enthusiasts as the dream manufacturer par excellence. Driving a Ferrari can only be compared to flying, say connoisseurs and admirers.

It is not surprising that such an extraordinary company has an equally extraordinary story to tell. Unlike other car manufacturers, it did not start out as a company in the true sense of the word – but as a racing team. The ‘Scuderia Ferrari’ was founded in 1929 by the aspiring racing driver Enzo Anselmo Ferrari in order to finance his own racing activities. As the later founder, he had been active in the Italian motorsport scene for several years and was now trying to intensify his endeavours.

After the end of the war in 1945, the production of racing cars began again in the new halls. The Ferrari 125C was the first car to officially bear the founder’s name and competed in various European competitions. Among them was an event that was still in its infancy at the time – Formula 1. The 125 was also the first car to be sold to private customers for financing purposes.

This idea, born out of necessity, developed into the Scuderia’s most important mainstay today. The company began to develop road cars that stood out in particular due to their extraordinary styling. Companies such as Pininfarina and Scaglietti were commissioned to design the new cars, turning them into icons of their time. Driving a Ferrari was worth good money to the rich and famous and soon made sales more lucrative than the racing business. The foundations for future success had been laid.

The current mid-engined weapon – the Ferrari 488 GTB – with its two turbochargers delivers a whopping 720 hp to the crankshaft and, at well over 330 km/h, leaves every driver with sweaty palms…
